Annual Report
June 2011
- We developed a tree nursery on a plot of land donated by one of our participant’s fathers. We employ 27 village women at a fair wage to work in the tree nursery. All profits are used to fund Just One Person program expenses.
- In February 2011, with technical assistance from Maseno Muliro University, we built a mushroom farming facility. We employ 12 village women to tend to the farm. Galaxy Youth Group, a registered CBO, is voluntarily assisting us with marketing the mushrooms.
- The 11 graduates have formed and registered the Just One Person Pioneers Youth Group. They are currently making paper beads to sell in a market in the Kakamega National Forest. They plan to expand their business activities to include making and selling clothes detergent and offering their services for plaiting hair.
For 3 just three years of operation, we’ve accomplished a great deal for such a small organization. But more importantly, those things we’ve accomplished that are not quantifiable are the beating heart of a sustainable organization….community engagement and small local industries that will ultimately ensure that Just One Person will be able to continue working for the empowerment of women and girls for generations to come. Believe it or not, we’ve accomplished all of this on a skeletal annual budget of $10,000 (our 2010 IRS Form 990EZ is posted on Guidestar.org).
Our Goals for 2011
- Add 10 girls in Form 2 (sophomore in high school) to the Just One Person programs
- Restructure school fee payment agreement; 35% paid by U.S. Board of Directors, 35% paid by Kenyan Board of Directors and 30% paid by girls’ parents or guardians
- Develop charcoal making project developed by MIT D-Lab. This project will use agricultural by-products such as sugar cane bagasse, banana leaves and maize stalks to create charcoal briquettes
- Assist the 11 2010 graduates in enrolling in appropriate, affordable tertiary education to pursue their future career or vocational goals.
