During the summer of 2009, in appreciation of his daughter Monica’s participation in JOP, George Ambutsi honored Just One Person with the gift of ¼ acre of land near his village of Ematende.

After considering the best ways to use the land, we began developing a tree nursery with the help of the newly formed Ematende Women’s Group and a small grant from our local Rotary Club. In December, JOP sponsored training for the Women’s Group enabling the women to be certified in tree nursery management by the Kenya Department of Forestry.

Eventually, there will be 32,000 seedlings growing in the nursery, including indigenous and exotic species like Caliandra, Croton, and South African Eucalyptus.  Due to Western Kenya’s adequate rainfall, trees planted from seed are ready for sale in about 3 months.  Profits from the sale of the trees are shared by the Ematende Women’s Group and JOP.

And, thanks to the Kenyan government’s initiative to reforest Kenya, the tree nursery has access to a viable market.
