The Ematende Women's Community Based Organization has 27 members. Teams of 4 women are responsible for the care and maintenance of the nursery one day each week.

The plot will support 32,00 seedlings including species like Caliandra, Croton, and Grevelia. Due to Western Kenya's adequate rainfall, trees planted from seeds are ready to harvest in about 3 months. As of October 2010, the Tree Nursery has sold 1,200, raising $478 for the operations of Just One Person Programs.

The Village Tree Nursery

In 2009, using a plot of land donated to Just One Person, we worked with women from a nearby village to develop a tree nursery.  We sponsored a horticultural workshop enabling the Ematende Women's Group to become certified in tree nursery management by the Kenyan Department of Forestry.

Mushroom Farming

Mushrooms are quickly developing as a lucrative cash crop in Kenya. With technical support from  Maseno Muliro University in Kakamega, we just completed the construction of   mushroom farming structure.

Community women are employed to plant, tend and harvest the crops.  It takes about 3 months for mushrooms to mature and crops are planted on varying growing cycles, ensuring year around income.

Galaxy Youth group helps market the mushrooms to wholesalers, where the mushrooms are ground up and sold in the market as a nutritional supplement.

Why are Just One Person sustainable projects are so important?

International nonprofits that rely on Western donations simply don't endure.  Sustainable community projects ensure that knowledge, skills and choices are passed down for generations to come.
